For centuries, people of Aurillac have lived as one large community within its districts and business areas. While the population has decreased, regional know-how has remained solidly rooted in the heart of the town's economic activity. Aurillac, the capital of the umbrella trade, manufactures over 50% of the whole French production of umbrellas. The furniture and agro-foods industries are another of the department's keystone activities.
